What’s wonder woods?

Wonder Woods was the wedding celebration of Jamon Deaver and Joey Lawton. It was a 3-day outdoor, camping, music and arts festival that took place Summer Solstice weekend, June 19-21, 2021.* The concept was created to bring together people who have positively impacted Jamon and Joey throughout the years, in a setting as unique and exciting as the couple themselves. Jamon and Joey wished for all attendees to leave with new lifelong friends, and a strengthened appreciation for one another and Mother Nature.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Summer Solstice weekend had significant spiritual meaning:

  • The longest day of the year symbolized new beginnings, prosperity and good spirits

  • The date celebrated a new season all about the beauty nature has to offer

  • It was about rejoicing in the present moment and attracting abundance into your life

*Originally scheduled for Labor Day weekend 2020, the event was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

WHERE WAS IT LOCATED?

Wonder Woods was situated on 40 acres of rural land 12 miles outside Berea, Kentucky — in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Located just south of Lexington, KY, Berea is home to a thriving artisan community, interwoven with the historic Berea College, the first interracial and coeducational college in the South.

Why Berea? Jamon was born and raised in Berea and the small Kentucky town holds special memories for both Jamon and Joey. One being it was the first place they said, “I love you.” The exact location of Wonder Woods is the property of Jamon’s mother and brother, a hidden gem in the rolling hills of the Bluegrass State.

WHERE DID PEOPLE STAY?

Wonder Woods was all about immersing yourself in the weekend, and camping on the festival grounds was highly encouraged.

Tents, portable restrooms and an outdoor shower and changing pavilion were available.
Tents were set-up, ready and waiting upon arrival. Each teepee-style tent could comfortably sleep two adults. At the end of the festival, guests were welcome to take their Wonder Woods teepee-tent as a souvenir! All remaining tents were donated to a local charity.

If camping wasn’t for you, a block of rooms were reserved at nearby Boone Tavern Hotel. If staying offsite, shuttles were available to transport guests to and from Wonder Woods, as parking on the festival grounds was limited.

WHAT DID PEOPLE WEAR?

Wonder Woods was all about being casual, comfortable and enjoying the outdoors. Guests came prepared to sweat, swim and sashay their way through three days of outdoor festival fun. There were matching rompers, flower crowns, custom tees, face jewels, branded bandanas, rainbow-themed everything, and more.

If guests needed outfit inspiration, a visual Style Guide was created to inform their attire.

What DID PEOPLE PACK?

First and foremost, no gifts. The grooms were not registered anywhere and desired nothing other than everyone’s love and positive energy.

The necessities were provided (food, shelter, water) but coming prepared with personal items made it easier to enjoy the weekend. The below list was a good place to start when packing for Wonder Woods.

  • Swimsuit (there was a lake)

  • Beach towel and/or bath towel

  • Camping gear: sleeping bags, bedding, and anything to help create a comfy home away from home

  • Small cooler (for any snacks or drinks you wanted in your tent)

  • Snacks or treats (to prevent getting hangry between meals)

  • Lantern / flashlight / headlamp (and batteries!)

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Rain gear (luckily it never rained!)

  • A light jacket or hoodie (in case it got cold at night)

  • Comfy shoes / sneakers

  • Bug spray (without DEET – be green!)

  • Sunscreen

  • A hat for shade

  • Sunglasses

  • Toilet paper (you never know)

  • A great attitude!
